As some of our readers probably know, we recently featured singer / songwriter Zac Poor on our site. At the time of the post we mentioned that aside from the music we heard, we really didn’t know much about the man himself. Well, this brought us to the conclusion that we needed to start doing some interviews with artists and who better than Zac to be our first?!
Pop Drop and Roll Interview Q’s and A’s
PDR: First off, tell us a bit about yourself, how you got your start, where you live etc…
Zac: I grew up in Fairfield Montana. Moved to LA when I was 17 to pursue music. I went to school for a while, waited tables and did odds and ends jobs till I was discover by Adam Anders, the Executive Music Producer of “Glee”, after hearing one of my demo’s. I signed a development deal with him and we began working together. Been writing for other artists and working on my project over the past 4 years.
PDR: Where does the name Zac Poor come from?
Zac: Haha! People always ask me that. I wish I could say I came up with it but it’s real. My Grandma gave me the name Zachary and Poor is my last name.
PDR: Describe your style of music
Zac: Pop. I enjoy me a good pop melody. Lyrically I’m influenced a lot by where I grew up. So it probably leans a little country at times.
PDR: Can you explain your songwriting process?
Zac: It really all depends on whether I’m writing for myself or another artist. If I’m in with an artist I typically show up with an arsenal of concepts and melodies that I think might work for them. But if I’m writing for myself, I like to start from scratch. The melodies usually come first. And then the lyrics. Lyrics are a pain in my ass. haha!
PDR: What are your studio essentials?
Zac: I have water with me at all times. I’m a big fan of Throat-Coat tea… which helps to combat the dehydration that my vocal chords experience due to my excessive consumption of coffee! I have also been known to polish of a bag of peanut M&M’s during recording sessions. The large bag.
PDR: Are you working on a album right now? If so, Can you tell us a bit about it?
Zac: I’m putting the finishing touches on an EP now. And planning on putting out a single digitally in April. I’m really excited to get new music out again and really proud of the direction it’s going. It feels very authentic. Very me. And my music has matured a lot since my 2010 release “Let’s Just Call It Heartbreak”.
PDR: Who are you working with?
Zac: I’ve been fortunate enough to work with some amazing people over the past 2 years. I did the majority of my EP with Mason “MdL” Levy (Justin Bieber, Maroon Five, Mike Posner). And I’m currently working with the Fliptones (Jason Derulo, FloRida), and Johnny Severin (RedOne, Lady Gaga, Enrigue Iglesias) on songs for my LP.
PDR: Dream collaborations?
Zac: So many! I’m a massive fan of Max Martin. I think he writes timeless pop hooks. Jonas Quant, who did the “Hurts” record. His production is crazy. Artist wise, I would love to collaborate with Kanye West, Sia, Kelly Clarkson, Taylor Swift… just to name a few. I could talk for hours about all the people I would love to work with.
PDR: Tell us something that people don’t know about you
Zac: I do photography. It’s a great creative outlet when I get burnt out on music.
PDR: If you could have any famous actor in a video of yours, who would it be and why?
Zac: Will Ferrell. He’s so funny. He doesn’t have to say a word and I still laugh.
PDR: If you weren’t a singer, what would you be doing?
Zac: I have a passion for music. So I think I would still be involved in it some how. Maybe as a manager. Or A&R.
